The Human gnome tells, with humor and tenderness, the adventures of a girl named Ángeles in the magic world of the gnomes. Her entrance into this world is due to the fact that the reigning fairy declares the time ripe for yet another human gnome to be born. Human gnomes are in charge of maintaining alive the spirit of gnomes among human beings. In order for a human gnome being able to fulfill this task, she will first be initiated and taught in the magic world by the fairy – assisted by the animals and the gnomes. In the case of Ángeles, this training turns out to be a great success, although the animals and gnomes initially nurse severe doubts when they see how the girls is quite in disagreement with what happens around her. But then comes the hour when Ángeles must leave the magic world. Upon her birth into the human world, she will of course have forgotten that she once had been in that other one – but she will be able to fulfill her task, for in her heart she will remain aware, with love, of the world of the gnomes.

Düsseldorf, Germany, during the last weeks of the Second World War. The bombs of the allied forces fall incessantly day and night. Only once a day, for half an hour, is the fire interrupted to give the civilians the opportunity to find water and food. The story tells the short minutes that a young girl – hidden in basement along with her mother and refugees – needs to fetch some bred in the only bakery still working. The fear, the destroyed city, the ruins, the smoke and the other people in the street – for her they are not more than faint brush strokes on her vital sprint. The escaping, scarce time turns into a precision chronometer, nothing more. The sweet odor of bread remains the sole still existing connection to a life that no longer is.
